photographer bio - mark seliger

Mark Seliger is an American photographer who is most known for his portraits.  He worked for Rolling Stone magazine in 1987 and served as chief photographer from 1992 to 2002.  He has also shot a number of covers for GQ and Vanity Fair.  I was drawn to his work because, working for Rolling Stone, he's shot many musicians and other notable figures and I just really enjoy his work.  He's shot people such as Kurt Cobain, David Bowie, Leonardo Di Caprio, Jake Gyllenhaal, Giorgio Armani, Heidi Klum, and many many others.

magazine review - american photo

     I was looking through the March/April 2015 issue of American Photo with its main feature on photographer, Mark Seliger.  The feature in this issue about him was my favorite because he mainly shoots musicians and that's the type of photography I am most interested in.

     I don't think I would subscribe to this magazine but if it contained content I was interested in I would probably buy it off the shelf. The information you can expect to find in this magazine is mainly about different photographers and how they got to where they are today and types of cameras, lenses, and other gear.

     The sections in this magazine are features, focus, and gear.  The features section in this magazine puts a spotlight on photographers and their story.  The focus section is similar to the features but the articles are much shorter and to-the-point and focus on one aspect of a photographer's work such as a book.  The gear section is to give information about new gear, the types of gear you would need for a certain type of assignment, etc.

ISO brightness is the standard that quantifies the brightness of paper as it would be perceived in a setting that is illuminated with a mixture of cool-white and unfiltered daylight.  ISO standard will always be brighter than TAPPI for the same paper.  ISO brightness can exceed 100% by a small number.

TAPPI brightness is the brightness of paper as it would be perceived in a setting that is illuminated in some cool-white fluorescence and some filtered daylight.  the UV component of TAPPI brightness is the lowest of any standard.  TAPPI brightness provides the lowest number of any of the three scales and rarely exceed 100%

I think these two websites would be good to use because they allow you to create and manage an online portfolio and your photography business.  Potential clients can view your work in a simple and easy to navigate manner.

event shoot (news photography) - title fight @ SXSW

cover:  Melodic hardcore band, Title Fight, takes the Waterloo Records Day Parties stage by storm.

Wednesday, March 18, Waterloo Records began its annual Day Parties concert series in the parking lot.  Seven bands were set to perform that day.

Lead vocalist, Ned Russin, performs the band's song, Secret Society, along with the rest of the members.  It was the first song of their 30 minute set.

The crowd enjoys the kick-off to the concert series that week.  28 bands were scheduled to perform at the Day Parties this year.

An eager fan bypasses the barricade to stage dive. Security got a little tighter after that, making sure it didn't happen again. 

Guitarist, Jamie Rhoden, takes the chorus in the fan-favorite, Rose of Sharon.  The band released their third album, Hyperview, February 3, 2015.

Pocket Portfolio

1.  I do think pocket portfolios are a good way to market your business
2.  Some advantages to using this style is that it almost forces people to look at your work again.
3.  disadvantages are that your work is small and you aren't getting the full effect necessarily
4.  I think he was justified in not sharing the publishers information but not the way he went about it he came off as quite rude.
5.  The website publisher, as he stated in the comments, the title was done by the website and not himself.
6.  Frankly, the series of comments read as though they were written by grown men arguing over video games in the YouTube comment section.
